UTS Bachelor of Arts in International Studies 25th Anniversary

Adam Brieger, BA IS/ B Laws, Latino USA

My fondest memory [of the BAIS] is of a cab ride in Mexico City, but it wasn’t the new sights or sounds. Rather, in that cab, after years of textbooks and assignments, I finally felt capable of fitting into a different culture as the driver and I chatted in Spanish and navigated the labyrinthine streets of Mexico City together. The BAIS has opened countless doors, beginning with a six-month internship at a non-profit organisation in Texas which I undertook after my study abroad experience.

Adam Brieger, a combined degree student with Law, went to the University of Texas at Austin for his ICS year in the Latino USA major in 2014. After completing his ICS year Adam opted to stay in-country and undertake a 6-month internship for a US NGO, Vote Smart, whose brief is to provide, in plain English, “free, factual, unbiased information on [political] candidates and elected officials to ALL Americans.” Vote Smart is also of note for providing up-to-date political candidate information of relevance to US minorities, including the USA’s large Latino communities.

The BAIS has challenged and redefined my ideals, passions and ambitions, and forms a key aspect of my professional identity as a lawyer today.
